Graduate Student Fellowship Opportunities

The goals of the GPS faculty fellowships are to increase the number of historically underrepresented students (African Americans, American Indians, Hispanic/Latin(x) Americans, and others) pursing graduate degrees in Geological and Planetary Sciences and Environmental Science and Engineering, and to promote the benefits of a graduate degree within academia. The GPS Faculty Fellows receive a $5,000 supplement to their stipend during their first year of graduate school. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST)

Citizenship: Foreign students who are enrolled full time at accredited U.S. institutions may apply to the FINESST program. However, there are restrictions on citizens of some countries that do not apply to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. See Announcement Document for details.

Through this Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST) solicitation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate (SMD) solicits proposals from accredited U.S. universities for research grants that identify an individual pursuing a graduate degree in Earth and space sciences related disciplines, as the participating Future Investigator (FI). The purpose of the FINESST is to provide relevant research and/or technology development project training in disciplines needed to achieve the goals of NASA SMD. FINESST grants are for student-designed research projects that contribute to SMD's science, technology and exploration goals. FINESST succeeds the NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF).

National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Provides living stipend plus fees/tuition for students in engineering or the natural or social sciences.

Please see the NSF GFRP Administrative Guide or the NSF Frequently Asked Questions resource before contacting the CO as many of your questions can be answered by reading the guide. Fellows are responsible for administering their own fellowship status, submitting reports, etc. through the NSF Fastlane Website. Fellows should include the following acknowledgement on all publications derived from work done while they were fellowship recipients: "This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship under Grant No. DGE‐1144469."

Citizenship: Research opportunities at NETL/MHFP are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.
Due Date: Four annual review cycles - February 1, May 1, June 1, November 1

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for graduate, postdoctoral and senior researchers at participating federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These awards include generous stipends ranging from $45,000 - $80,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients, and higher for additional experience. Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000. These awards provide the opportunity for recipients to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S. Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.

Eligible applicants for Hertz Fellowships must be students of the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States of America, and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.
